Learning Related Vision Problems

A Learning Related Vision Problem (LRVP) is a visual skill problem that affects learning, NOT a learning disability.  It is very easy for a child to get misdiagnosed as having a learning disability, when in reality it is a vision problem.  One of the most common misdiagnoses is ADD.  This is because many of the symptoms overlap with each other.  To see this list click here.

Since 80% of what we learn in the classroom is through our visual system, a LRVP can make school very difficult for a child.  The two areas of LRVPs that children need the most help with are Visual Efficiency and Visual Information Processing.

Visual Efficiency refers to skills such as eye tracking, eye teaming, and focusing.  Difficulties in these areas can mean the child is experiencing blurry vision, eye strain, headaches, and other symptoms making school very frustrating.

Visual Information Processing involves skills like being able to perform multi-step directions, visual spatial orientation, eye-hand coordination, auditory-visual integration, etc.

If you suspect that your child may have a LRVP, the best thing to do is to set up an in-depth developmental evaluation of your child's visual system.  This will give you a closer look at what is really going on.  Depending on the results of the evaluation vision therapy may be recommended.

Testimonials
"He enjoys reading by himself.  He has always loved books but insisted on being read to-that has changed.  He also seems less frustrated in general.  He talks about his eyes being better and things seem easier now."

"Laney had reading scores of 20% and below first grade reading level.  She also had problems focusing in school and with homework.  Since she started vision therapy she has scored no less than 90% on all weekly reading tests, she loves to read now and she pays more attention in school.  This program has made my daughter a new student in class and helped at home."

"Her confidence has improved so along with her spirit.  She is one of the higher readers in her class now.  She enjoys reading now and homework isn't a constant fight (since I thought she just was not paying attention) and she is eager to do it now."
